Who We Are

On February 27, 2008, the New York Metro Chapter of the National Autism Association (NAA) was formed.

The NAA is dedicated to educating and empowering families affected by autism and other neurological disorders; advocacy; and raising public and professional awareness.

Embracing these core principles, the New York Metro Chapter will focus on the following goals during 2008:

1. To be a resource to families, educators, and caregivers affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.

2. To educate parents, educators and caregivers on meeting the varied needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and on the many available treatments for children on the Spectrum and children with other neurological disorders.

Chapter meetings are held every month.

New York City Autism/Asperger's Conference
held on October 11-12

Parents, professionals, caregivers and educators attended the first two-day conference organized by Autism-Conferences with the collaboration of NAA-New York Metro Chapter.

The first day was devoted to Educating Children with Autism, featuring nationally-renowned education expert Barbara Doyle, M.S. who spoke about tips & tricks, teaching reading, and prioritization, beginning with lifetime in mind. A panel of adults on the spectrum, shared their journeys; and John Gilmore held a town-hall meeting on the 'Political Landscape in New York'.

The second day's session on "Healing Children & Adults with Autism" featured Sydney Baker, M.D. as the keynote speaker, spoke on deconstructing autism, paradigm and paradox. Dr. Kenneth Bock, M.D. discussed biomedical approaches to the treatment of ASD; Arthur Krigsman, M.D. reviewed the common G.I. problems in ASD children; and Tapan Audhya, Ph.D. shared the results of studies on treating nutritional and metabolic problems in children with autism. Michael Elice, M.D. discussed his recently published study on the use of ACTOS and its ability to reduce inflammation and reduce the symptoms of autism; and Stuart Freedenfeld, M.D. spoke about the major sources of environmental toxins and provided practical suggestions on how to decrease exposure.
