The Medicaid Waiver process can be intimidating and harrowing. E&S has teamed up with the experts to provide parents with direct and succinct answers to all their questions. There will be a brief presentation followed by an in-depth Q&A Session. An hour of your time could help you secure much-needed services for years to come. Free Summer Programs for Families Affected by Autism in Spanish & English in Queens

ArtAccess is a unique program of the Queens Museum of Art designed specifically for visitors with special needs. Launched in 1983 at the Queens Museum of Art as Please Touch to provide art education for the visually impaired, ArtAccess has since grown into a nationally reproduced model program designed to allow audiences with diverse abilities to enjoy a personal connection to works of art. Exposure to the arts plays an essential role in the lives of all people by promoting self-expression and communication. ArtAccess reaffirms the Museum's commitment to making its services accessible to all visitors, including those with varying physical, emotional and cognitive abilities. (http://www.queensmuseum.org/events/special-needs ) Queens Libraries are working in partnership with the Queens Museum's ArtAccess Program to create new programming for bi-lingual families affected by autism. The groups are free and open to the entire family.

The first session of these programs will be held at the Flushing & Woodside Library Branches in Spanish-English, with two ArtAccess Educator. The programs will incorporate library resources and art making directives. The staff is experienced in offering creative programming for people with special needs. Although these programs will be geared towards the entire family participating the shared experience. This session will be a 5 week program starting the week of July 12th and closing in an exhibition event. Details to come.

By offering programming that is more accessible and makes use of library collections, Queens Library and Queens Museum of Art aim to further accessibility for families in our community with children with special needs. Drama Therapy Groups for Kids & Teens Diagnosed along the Autistic Spectrum

Thursday afternoons from 4:45 - 6:00 for adolescents (summer session starting soon!)
LOCATION: The Psychodrama and Creative Arts Therapy Institute 14 East 4th Street Suite 501 (between Broadway and Lafayette), New York, NY
FEE: $320 for 6 week session
New groups for kids 5 - 10 years old starting Saturdays
Through theater games, improvisation, role play and drama therapy techniques, group members will work on creativity and spontaneity while improving social skills, increasing self-esteem and experiencing positive connections with others. Led by two licensed creative arts therapists with extensive experience working with children with special needs, this drama therapy group is specially designed for kids and teens who have difficulty in social situations because of Asperger Syndrome/Autism or other social challenges. KEEN - Kids Enjoy Exercise Now

KEEN is a national, nonprofit volunteer-led organization that provides one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families and caregivers. SNACK, the Special Needs Activity Center for Kids

SNACK after school and weekend programs, geared toward children ages 3-18 with special needs, are designed and staffed to address challenging behavioral issues, increase skill levels and promote improved social interaction. SNACK provides a variety of group and individual activities including sports, art, music, yoga, movement, drama and swimming. Also have ongoing parent education sessions. Children and adults with developmental disabilities who live with their families can choose from a great variety of free trips throughout New York City.

You may request:
Up to four (4) tickets per family per event
Transportation
Food vouchers are included for many events

You must include a complete psychological evaluation and a psychosocial evaluation so we can determine your eligibility according to NYS OMRDD Family Support funding guidelines. Note: For Department of Education students, the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) does not document OMRDD eligibility and is not acceptable.

NAA-New York Metro Chapter participates in Autism United Hope Walk

On a brisk Sunday morning, NAA-New York Metro joined families and communities in Belmont Lake State Park for the Autism United Hope Walk. NAA-New York Metro set up booth and brought their message to the Long Island community. Booths were set up by advocacy groups, professionals, and businesses who serve the autism community, all coming together to improve the lives of people with autism.
